Decades ago, your pinks or blues or greens were supposed to match. In fact, twinsets were the perfect topper to any poodle skirt or pedal pusher. But times have changed - the twin sets and matching colors are not the only way to show you have style. Today, pair two colors in the same color family is a way to update your wardrobe and maximize the pieces already in your closet. Pairing a light hue and a dark hue of the same color is a great way to pull together a bold, stylish look.

In fact, color blocking is a very modern approach to wearing color and looking like a fashionista. It's a really bold and eye-catching look!
Here, in this picture I'm wearing three different shades in the blue/green family. My navy blue coat and light blue shirt pair nicely together, but they don't try to compete with the dark turquoise pants. The two colors complement one another. This look is classy and modern. No twinset needed here!

This second picture features a more daring version of color blocking. Both the pink and red colors in this outfit are bright and striking.
What makes this a successful color block is that one of the colors is a pastel while the other is a bold, rich primary color. They play off one another. Using all neutral and simple accessories - jewelry, belt and shoes - keeps the attention on the pairing of the two colors.

Now, go back into your closet and find two pieces in the same color family. Try them out together and give color blocking a shot!
